Madden NFL 17 Review (After Patch)

by Mr. Nobody
Another year and anther great game!  Its amazing how Madden NFL is able to provide the ultimate gaming experience for newcomers while adding new features for the hardcore fans that have been playing since the 90s.  This is a after first patch review and all opinions are my own.  To keep this review short I will only point out 2-3 good features per mode and keep my don’t likes to a minimal.
The Moment
What I like-
  • Play The Moments- the fastest way to play Madden NFL 17- to jump into the game at key third downs, game-winning drives and more. Would-be GMs can utilize new Big Decisions to manage every facet of their team in the quickest and most convenient way ever. No matter your play style or favored game mode, this year you have the tools to take your team all the way.
  • Team Needs- No longer do you have to search for the best fit for your team.  Madden Franchise mode now collects the best trades and available free agents for you.  I really love this feature.  This really helps you upgrade your team.
There’re also tons of other random features added into this years Madden 17 franchise mode that you might find useful like- Gameplaning, Tendencies, Player Focusing, and In-Game Boosts.  A feature that is no longer available is Franchise Mode website.  The site wasn’t really used by Madden fans, so I can see why they removed it.
What I don’t like:
  • No Sim Full Game Watch-  I love the moments feature, but I would love to just slide the controller to the center and have both teams play it out…
  • Lack of story-  I decided to create a QB this year, but there is a big disconnect.  Having a story or some type of media interaction would be amazing for franchise mode.  Maybe in the future they could incorporate a story or having more features that make playing as a player more fun.
  • More risky trading.  We see crazy trades in the NFL all the time and the first thing that comes to my mind is “That trade would never happen in Madden.”  Why Not Madden?
Overall- Franchise mode is ok.  Great new features, but its not a everyday game mode for me.  I see myself playing franchise 3-4 times a week.  Franchise gets a 7

Game Play/In Game Features

The challenge for madden is to convince fans every year that they will be buying a new game and not a previous Madden with a roster update.  The best way to do that is to fix previous issues and provide amazing new game play features.  Lets see if they were able to do that this year.
  • WOW! This all new commentary team of Charles Davies and Brandon Gaudin is amazing.  They have the task of bringing Madden fans new content each week.  Will they be talking about off the field issues?  Yes.  You can now play Madden and catch up on the latest news from around the league.  Madden took commentary to a new level with this feature.
Special Teams:

  • Kicking took a turn for the BEST this year.  Madden caught fans off guard by changing the kicking in this years game.  Previous years anything under 40 yards was automatic.  Not this year… You can and will miss a 30 yard FG. As we all witness this Football Sunday kicking in the NFL and Madden will be a challenge. Madden took a 3 button approach this year making the kicking more realistic.  You click the button once to start the kick, click again at the top of the meter to set power and finally again at the bottom of the meter to set accuracy. The harder you try and kick it, the more difficult it will be to hit the accuracy window.  They also added other kicking features like skypunts, backspin and Ice kicker (Which is 10x better this year).
Ball Carrier Special Moves/Modifiers:
  • Carrying the ball is the most common way to move down the field rather its returning kicks, hand offs or after catching the football.  Once the ball is in your hands you know have tons of options to make the defender look silly on the field.   As a ball carrier you can now choose between, stander moves, speed modifier, precision modifier and steerable modifier & utility moves.  There is no limit to what you can do on the field this year.
  • Madden took a long hard look at the defense this year.  There are tons of new things you can do before the snap that could change the outcome of the play.  Madden even added an auto flip feature.  Defensive Auto-Flip- The AI will automatically flip your defense when the offense flips so that your defense aligns to the proper strength in relation to the offensive formation they are seeing after the huddle break.  This feature will help you against the cheese players out there that like to flip the same play over and over again.  Note: This feature can be turned off.
What I Don’t Like:
  • Most of the things I don’t like can be turned off in the game options.  The one thing I would love to see Madden add one day is the ability to really recognize a offense play.  If someone is running the same play over and over again a player should have the option to tell his defense who and where the ball is going.  Right now the only thing we have close to this is the Pass or Run feature you can do before the snap.  Game Play gets a 8

Madden Ultimate Team/Draft Champions:
This by far is the best game mode ever in the history of sports video games.  Madden Ultimate Team (MUT) has some a long way and this year Madden didnt let us down.  Every year they have been added features that the community have been asking for.  Lets take a look at a few of them
Solo Challenges:
  • You can now restart without losing any contract.

  • Chemistry now has a new meaning.  This year you can really see the effects of using the chemistry.  In the past fans thought chemistry didnt mean anything, but today it could make a huge difference in your lineup.  The best part is you can really see the boosts on the player’s attributes

  • This is a hot topic in the MUT community.  For those that just started playing MUT you might not understand the frustration of the MUT veterans when they are complaining about the pack odds.  It took me a few years, but I now like the new packs odds.  A player can probably average one elite per bundle.  The upside is there will be more balance teams.  If you feel like having a stack team then I suggest heading over to Draft Champions.  I would only suggest opening packs during promos that way you get the most for your money.
What I don’t like:
No Draft Champion reset for rank and unrank:
  • I love Draft Champion, but I hate that I cant reset the team I drafted if I don’t like it.  The only way to reset is to lose games which forces you to restart your season.  I feel that if you have the tickets to restart then that option should be available.  NOTE:  You can restart your draft ever 24 hours in friends h2h only.
Elite Cards Animation:
  • There is a new animation for elite cards in packs.  The only issue with this animation is it shows up for both elite players and collectibles.  The only thing worst then pulling packs and not getting an elite is pulling packs and having your only elite animation be a collectible.  I hope there is a way to fix this with a patch.
Madden Ultimate Team/DC gets a 8
Overall Madden is a solid 8 this year.  There was more features and dislikes about this game to cover, but I just wanted to highlight my main points.  There is two other madden related things I would like to point out.  First, EA Access is a must have for EA fans.  You get most all trial games from EA early, tons of free games, and discounts (Games and ingame purchase).  EA Access cost $4.99 a month
Sign up for MUT Rewards.  This site helps keep track of the amount of packs you open, monthly status rewards, and if lucky enough a chance at getting Madden early delivered by FedEx.  This feature is free-
